I like to buy new then run them a long time. My current everyday driver is a 1990 year old Jeep Cherokee that I bought new. I expect to get a few more years out of it. At this point it's way beyond a reasonable trade-in or resale value, so I may as well run it. I read an article some time ago where a guy said the total cost of ownership was least when you buy a used 4 or 5 year-old car, run it for 2-3 years, then get rid of it and get another. he claimed to be looking at everything, purchase cost, maintenance, insurance, resale value, etc. The way he put it sounded plausible, but I didn't check his math so I don't know if he knew what he was talking about, or was full of it.
