What for engine is it? C-12 or (3406E C-15 or C-16 all basically the same) what for Hp and mileage a Cat dealer. Most Pete's if driven right will get about 5.5mpg, even the 550's. If you get the serial number, your Cat dealer can run it and tell you what engine work was done. As you can imagine I've seen about all types of problems. We have seen a number of head gasket failures, but other than that they are pretty solid. If I was an owner operator, I wouldn't have anything but a Cat. I have been amazed with what they have stood behind. They had some problems with cranks breaking. We had several engines out of warranty with over 500k miles on that Cat help pay to remove the engine and install a new crank. If any engine is taken care of mainly coolant additives and changing oil, they will last for a million miles. High hp S-60 Detroits will eventually blow up over 500k miles. A guy had two that blew up in the same truck within a year. Guess what, it has a fresh 3406E with a 2 year 200K mile warranty.
