This really isn't a answer to your question...but it's a good reason for me to remember the "good old days". Back 35 years ago, when I and some friends were racing open wheeled modifieds on the dirt tracks, we always ran small block Chevies. Would start out with a plain old 283...bore it out .040...put in a Racer Brown Cam...add some F.I. heads...aluminum intake w/ 750 Holley...dual point distributor...and then take it to the tracks, and run it wide open. We never did have a problem with the bottom end. I don't think you will either.
