No offense Bill. I appreciate the fact that you are having good service from a John Deere. But there are some who do not. I know of a 2040 that won't start on its own at any temp. It does not have a lot of time on it. The clutch is not reliable and the hydraulics quits when you climb a steep grade. It does seem to have plenty of power and does not use a drop of oil and is serviced regularly. I had at one time a John Deere 300 backhoe, it to would not start on its own. Of all the John Deere 2840 that I have come across, they have TA problems. There is a rancher about 40 miles from me that uses his Zetor 6340 along side a Cat dozer clearing land and pushing timber. The trees are doing a number on his loader's hydraulic lines. He is talking about getting another Zetor. A smaller one for maintenace work. Another rancher has a 10 or 12 year old 7711 Zetor and the only way you can keep it from starting on its own is to run it out of fuel or take the battery out of it. It had a weak battery in it the last time I saw it and wouldn't hardly spin the engine but it started. It was 25 degrees that morning. So I guess to make this long story shorter is that everyone is different, so there is a different tractor for everyone.

Today's Featured Article - Gatherin of the Orange - by Rick Nikolich. In July of 1998 I was talking to fellow Allis Chalmers collector Mike Schilling about the annual "Gathering of The Orange" AC show coming up in August of 1999. He got this wild idea that we should get a convoy of AC tractors and drive them from Charlotte, Michigan 105 miles to LaGrange, Indiana. ... [Read Article]
