Wishing your wife a speedy recovery. I haven't read all the posts, but may I suggest "round penning", ala Dennis Reis and the others who are perennielly on the RFD channel. Its the "horse whisperer" thing- you basically get the horse to submit, then they just want to please you rather than fight. Sounded goofy to me at first, but it works. My wife continues to break a couple every year (we're 57 now, and she has been at this for 30 years), and to my knowledge, she has never been thrown. It not only works for initially training, but for periodic "tune-ups" when they get a little owly.
