Was raised with farm dogs, never had a good idea of their background or breading. From a health standpoint a mongrel can be expected to be better than the purebred. This is because there is more inbreeding in a purebred which strengthens any health weakness. The inbreeding also strengthens other characteristics; physical and social which are important to some people because they think they know what to expect. As a married urbanite when “she” wanted a dog I checked a couple books out of the library which helped me with breed selection and other aspects. You may have heard it before “get an owners or service manual”, same thing. Our easy breed choice has been Boston Terriers. They are sure not for everyone but are really great companion animals, very trainable and super with kids. With dogs, like tractors one color or size does not fit all. I read an article recently which indicated one should expect a dog to absorb $12,000 in costs and upkeep. I know personally people in an urban setting to spend that much and more, medical being the largest category. Go for it but not on just a whim. Think of it as a long term thing.
