I haven't had much luck in keeping a tomcat. The ones I have raised from kitten size and left unaltered either just disappeared or came home so beat up from fighting that they died. So now if I decide I like a little tomcat, I take him to the vet for a small operation. After that the resulting ex-tom stays home much better, is not interested in fighting and tend not to spray like a regular tomcat does. They still seem to like to hunt mice and are much calmer. I always hated to get attached to a nice little cat and then lose it. I think the $50 or so per cat is a good investment. Good luck, glad he showed up in more or less good shape.
