Update on the GMC 4000

Went back on sunday to work on the old girl, popped the hood and find she"s got an inline six, not the v-6. Owner says he"s sure it"s a 292. He"s been working on it for a little while, turns over but won"t fire. Turns out she"s been sitting for about 4 years not 2, that makes a big difference.

We fill the tank with fresh gas and check for spark, no spark. A quick check of the cap and rotor shows lots of corrosion, not much use in doing anything else, I"ll come back on Tuesday.

Tuesday I pick up a new cap, rotor, coil, and points. Put all these in, give her a splash of gas down the carb and try to start her up. She runs, but won"t stay running. Run a quick check on the fuel line and pump, bad pump. Damn, now I"ve got to make another trip to town.

While I"m cussing myself for not checking the fuel pump, I stomp out of the barn and suddenly find myself on the floor, curled up in the fetal position, eyes welling up with tears. I"ve managed to hit my shin on the tongue of the grain drill parked next to the truck. HOLY CRAP THAT HURTS!!! Once I"m done calling for my mommy and stop making dirt angels on the floor, I limp to the truck and head to town for the fuel pump.

I return with the fuel pump, glare at the grain drill, and proceed to make the rest of the repairs. The whole time I can swear I hear laughing, I"m not sure if it was mice or the drill. I prime the carb again, hop in the cab(pun intended) and turn the key, she fires right up. Give her a little choke, she smooths out and purrs like a kitten. Hopefully in the next day or so, I"ll get to take her out of the barn and away from that damn drill.
