Tell your wife the island habitat is not big enough to support all those squirrels. It is more humane to shoot some of them and kill them quickly and without suffering than to let them suffer a slow death of starvation because there is not enough food to go around. It's called wildlife management. I didn't climb to the top of the food chain just to eat purina rabbit chow. There's room on this earth for all God's creatures. Right next to the mashed potatoes.
