: Hi, hope you can help me with this one. My 1940 AC,model B timing appears to be advanced a bit too far. She frequently backfires through the carburator. She's an armstrong start, so whenever I crank her over I have to check that I don't have any new fractures. I recently ordered a copy of the AC service manual but the pages describing the magneto have been left out for some reason.
: So, my question is this: how do I retard the ignition timing a bit, so she'll save me some cranking and some wrists.
: Also, where can I find info or a diagram of the Fairbanks Morse magnetos?
: Thanks,
: Dave

Dave,
To retard the timing, take notice of which way the mag turns. The bolts that hold the mag are in slotted holes. Loosen the two bolts that hold the mag and turn the whole mag in the same direction that it rotates. This will retard the timing. Mike
