These thoughts have been with me for years. The post above is true. Farmers/ranchers feed this country, and other countries, and not only are treated as serfs and a nonessential industry but are denied the benefits of the wealth they produce.
The middle men and those who exploit the products produced by this amazing group of people reap the real wealth generated by these people. It goes on and on. Not only in the farming/ranching industry but others as well.
I believe, as distastful as it may be, there is only one solution. Farmers/ ranchers MUST gain control over the next level of the processing of their produce.
When ever I say to a farmer, 'why don't you own/control the bakery that uses $.06 of your wheat to produce a $2.50 loaf of bread', he says, 'I don't want to, I want to farm'.
Well, maybe the farmers/ranchers should look at the next processing level of the products they produce.
The intelligence exist amonst you to capture the wealth that is truly yours. I read this forum and am amazed at the degrees and experience that 'slip' into this forum (rarely does anyone brag about their accomplishments). With the combined experience of the folks on this forum ANYTHING could be acomplished. Why hasn't it?? Because you as a group are the most self sufficient, independant, ornery bunch of humans ever to walk the face of this earth.
My single wish is that before I die the farmers/ranchers of this country somehow/someway claim their birthright.
I think I'll go get me another Jack Daniels and ginger.

Today's Featured Article - Gatherin of the Orange - by Rick Nikolich. In July of 1998 I was talking to fellow Allis Chalmers collector Mike Schilling about the annual "Gathering of The Orange" AC show coming up in August of 1999. He got this wild idea that we should get a convoy of AC tractors and drive them from Charlotte, Michigan 105 miles to LaGrange, Indiana. ... [Read Article]
