You'll get more useful information if you say what state you're in. Insuarance is regulated by the states. (It is the only industry that has no federal regulation.) The same company that is cheap in one state is going to be high in another. Here's my suggestion: Start by going to progressive.com and get a quote. They will also provide quotes from their own competitors, so you'll have about three quotes to start with. Then call a couple of the big outfits, such as Allstate and State Farm. Then call a couple of independent agents and get quotes from them. Chances are the independent can get you a little better deal, because they will know which companies will penalize you because of your age, driving record or credit history. It has been my experience that most reputable agents will direct you to a competitor if they know that you will get a much better deal from the competitor. Each company has its own policies for setting its rates; for example some companies run credit checks while others do not.
