Believe it or not, there are places that charge you to get rid of it. I had a relative die last year in New Jersey - in a suburb close to New York City. We sold the house - and a few days before closing - we got a complaint that the house had oil-heat and two full 275 gallon tanks down the basement. The new buyer insisted the potentially "toxic" oil be removed before the sale. Seems there's a lot of fear with older houses and basement tanks that might leak. If they test the basement soil and find evidence of oil - you're screwed. I live over 200 miles away - and had no good way to transfer the oil back home. Wound up PAYING 25 cents a gallon to have the oil removed! I also frequently see ads local to me - "free full tank of heating oil if you remove tank." So yeah, there's free oill around.
