I would be a little sceptical of a "noise" coming from the trans warranting a reman. If it`s out of warranty, I`d pick it up and take it to another shop to get a second opinion of what the noise actually is. The biggest thing I`m seeing on the freestars is stripped pump shaft splines in the torque converter. Your driving along and all of a sudden--nothing. Normally that doesn`t justify rebuilding the trans. I`d want a good explanation of what they think the noise is before I`d let em tear into it...

Truthfully, I could go on and on about every make and models transmission problems, they all have em. All in all the 4F50N trans is pretty darned good. I know I`m saying that to someone who`s having trouble with one, but don`t pull the trigger on that one just yet. Dealerships and unfortunately some independent shops like to paint the picture worse than it really is.

A little more info on what the noise is she`s hearing and when she`s hearing it, and I may be able to give you a little insight. Good luck.

BTW there are no E clips in that trans. The older versions had E clips on the band apply pistons. If you lost one on the low band you had no 1st or 2nd, on the OD band you lost OD. Both were easily accessible by removing their respective servo covers. BW

Today's Featured Article - Gatherin of the Orange - by Rick Nikolich. In July of 1998 I was talking to fellow Allis Chalmers collector Mike Schilling about the annual "Gathering of The Orange" AC show coming up in August of 1999. He got this wild idea that we should get a convoy of AC tractors and drive them from Charlotte, Michigan 105 miles to LaGrange, Indiana. ... [Read Article]
