When I was in a jet fighter squadron in the Marine Corps, the engine shop got a new Pfc right out of school.
One day the MSgt in charge of the shop told the kid to get him 50 yards of flight line. The MSgt nailed the kid on that one.
A couple of days later, the MSgt was building an engine and told the Pfc to get him a tailpipe stretcher--which there actually was. These particular engines had a curved fairing on the back that fit over a lip on the back of the engine and was clamped down with a lock ring.
The tool to expand the fairing to fit over the lip on the engine probably had some fancy name, but it was commonly referred to as a tailpipe stretcher. The good Pfc wasn't going to be burned twice. He argued for fifteen minutes that there wasn't any such thing as a tailpipe stretcher. The MSgt had to show him one to convince him.
