Probably due to the fact that you are using the unsynchronized shifter as neutral, leave the range lever in gear and the 4-speed in neutral for parking or stopping the tractor with engine running. I ran a 2955 w/cab and if I used the range lever for neutral and had some degree of grind if shifting quickly from neutral into range if I didn't hold the clutch in for a few seconds.
