Nice explanation! A few advantages each system has over the other: Open center: Generally less expensive (gear pump is cheaper to build), slightly more energy efficient, less sensitive to oil contamination than closed center. Works fine for simple, single circuit hydraulic systems. Closed center: More flexible - can run multiple functions (2 or more cylinders, power steering, etc. all at once from a single pump), simplified external piping (no flow dividers, etc required). Better suited for complex systems like larger tractors, backhoes, etc.
