: : Can someone tell me how gas is leaking down into my oil pan. It seems to happen rather quickly after filling the gas tank. I found it the other day when I changed the oil for the first time. I've only owned the tractor for about four months. The engine runs fine but I haven't put a load on it since finding this problem. A neighbor who does occasional work on tractors said it was a mystery to him. He said it shouldn't be happening with the tractor running so good. I'd appreciate any ideas..

: This can happen very easily but sounds a little hard to believe unitl it is explained. The float valve in the carb is sticking open and the gas is getting into the crankcase from the carb. How may you ask when this is an updraft carb? Remember that the air intake for the carb is closed and extends upword above the height of the engine. As gas seeps into the carb and runs out the jets it starts to fill the carb intake and starts backing up into the intake manifold and even higher until it reaches the intake valves and then runs down into the crankcase. A couple of things to do, check the carb and maybe rebuild (changing the float valve) and also close the shut off valve comming out of the fuel tank.
: Good Luck, Kevin

Kevin is right, I have an 860 that will do that. I am very carefull to shut off the gas valve below the tank every time I shut off the engine. Plan to redo the carb one of these days.
