I hope you did as posted below and EITHER changed to a full true 12 volt coil (no external ballast resistor required) OR ELSE if you used a 6 volt coil you added an external series voltage dropping (12 to 6) Ballast Resistor after the ignition switch ahead/before the coil????? Otherwise you may have damaged something
Normally the points are closed (unless a firing piston is at TDC) soooooooo with the ignition ON there should be voltage on the coils input (NOT to distributor) BUT NO VOLTAGE ON THE COILS TO DISTRIBUTOR OUTPUT because the closed points should have that terminal to frame ground (via closed ignition points)
If alls well a test lamp on the coils output (or distributor input) should flash ON (points open) and OFF (points closed) as the engine is slowly cranked over.
Id insure the points are not all burned or corroded (file or replace as needed) and are indeed fully closing when not on a high cam lobe cuz when they are closed there shouldnt be any voltage with respect to frame ground on the coil output (wire to distributor)
