Some generators will put out enough voltage to charge a 12V system (you may need to put a smaller pulley on it to speed it up), a good generator shop should be able to test yours. In that case, all you need is a 12V voltage regulator. I've been told that there are no good 12V regulators being sold anymore, and personal experience has backed that up; the last 4 I bought (from different places) have each lasted about a year. Since a 12V alternator (w/built-in regulator) doesn't cost a whole lot more that a 12V voltage regulator, I'd consider going that route right off the bat, if you're not worried about a non-stock look.
