Just read that the great law-makers here in New York state are proposing a new law that will require all firewood sold in New York that is transported more than 50 miles to be baked first. Must be baked at a minimum of 160 degrees F for 75 minutes before sold.
I'm wondering, how in the heck are they going to enforce? Firewood police? Firewood tags similar to turkey and deer tags? And, I wonder what will happen to prices from law-abiding sellers? A firewood cop pulls me and my truck over. #1 - will I have to somehow prove wood-origin, and #2 have to have a certificate of oven-bake quality?
Guess I'm glad I own my own woodlots and cut all my own wood. But, I do have several lots over 50 miles from my home.
I realize that some of this is based on bug-control. Also realize that some of this stuff is just plain silly. They're already working on a cow-fart tax. Will they charge by CFM? Also working on putting GPS into everyone's car and taxing us by how many miles we drive. I wonder - once the state gets involved in regulating firewood - what possible fees, permits, and taxes will follow?
