I have a 1981 F350 it originally came with a 351M and once I installed a Eldelbrock Performer cam and a 4 bbl. it didn't run too bad. Still kinda weak and would bend pushrods if you got the rpm up too high. Got maybe 7 mpg pulling the trailer ?
Then I got the bright idea to change it over to a 460. I found an old tire center truck 1985 ? and bought it. Ford's are not the best for interchanging engines, but I made it work. Used the same carb.as I ran on the 351M on the 460 and gained 1 mpg on the trailer up to 8 mpg.But gained ALOT more pulling power ! I imagine the 460 cam is stock ? 460's are VERY good engines stay away from the 351M-400 , but a 351W isn't too bad , but not for pulling. Most love the 7.3l diesel but I do think they are too high maintenance and the fuel costs too much so I doubt you gain anything other then bragging rights unless you are pulling full time.
