I clearly recall the days in which "permanent" antifreeze was the exception. Methanol was often used, but it boiled off (evaporated) and had to be regularly replenished. Some thrifty souls who drove only once a week or so would leave the system drained and fill with water just when they wanted to actually drive- which was infrequently in WWII with gasoline rationing. In really cold weather, the water in the radiator might freeze before the water from the engine block started circulating. The radiator was already cold when filled and the cold air blasting through it cooled off the water very quickly. The result was that the engine coolant had nowhere to go and the engine would boil with huge clouds of condensing steam in the cold air. One trick to prevent the radiator from freezing was to cover the radiator front with cardboard or cloth to slow the passing of the air. Sometimes it worked, sort of.
