I'm basically trying to increase my mechanical advantage by speeding up the entire drive train at the same ground speeds. I'm looking to make it easier to get loads moving.
It would make my clutch last longer because first gear would be fully engaged at 4MPH instead of 7MPH like it is now. This truck is geared HIGH, like the other guy said. 1st gear will go to 35 MPH. I believe do have the aluminum Mazda Trans. My truck is a 1999.
I know that 4 low gives me all the gears I need, and I use it all the time maneuvering the trailer here in the yard. But can I be shifting in and out of 4-low while I’m moving on city streets? No. I already don’t use 5th gear when I pull ANYTHING. It just doesn’t do it. Running at 60 MPH, 2600 RPM in 4th and its just humming along like a sewing machine.
This truck gets 16 mpg ALL THE TIME. 30-35 mph town driving, 55-65 mph state roads, 70 mph interstate, doesn't matter. I actually got 16.7 at 72 mph going from IN to IL in I-70 this winter. I personally doubt that mileage would change much if at all. This little mustang engine stuffed in a truck still wants to spin like it’s in a car.
So now I'm torn, I know I would like the benefits, just can't get around the cost.
