Tommy, gasoline is at least as dangerous to the engine as ether. Putting a gas-soaked rag over the intake is a good way to overspeed your engine. I recall using gas once or twice in a pinch, put only if we were out in the middle of nowhere without any ether. If nobody used starting fluid, there would be a lot of diesel engines that would never get started. Ether is OK when used judiciously, but only if you have to and only the smallest amount possible. Even the most stubborn engine will fire up with a whiff of starting fluid.
