I think you should at least give it a try if your interested at all.
I wanted to be a Cop when I got out of high school, that was in 77. It was a bad time then, recession just setting in. Tried a few different departments but with just high school it was not enough. Police departments were able to hire college grads due to lack of jobs.
I have had a few different jobs since high school. Never got a chance to go after a job as a cop again, marriage, kids, mortage couldnt go to starting at a low pay. Did make it back to College and am a computer tech now.
I have just turned 50 but still in very good shape. Good vision except almost time for reading glasses, that small print getting harder to see. If I wasnt too old now to get hired I would be going after a job as a cop.
Its too bad the age thing gets in the way.I think I could still give most young cops a go for their money as far as being physical goes. Farm life does keep a person in shape. Wouldnt be able to run as fast as I could 30 years ago though. I think I would be able to handle situations better maybe, that comes with maturaty. Same goes for fear or being able to hold somebody as they died in your arms, been there a couple of times. Handle stress, yes, have had a lot of years of handling stress.
I personally think age could be a plus for a police department. Lifes experiances around all different kinds of people can give a real good idea how to handle people.
Ok enough rambling go for it and dont be afraid to check out different departments, cities. If you dont you might regret it when you get older. I know I regret not going after a job as a cop when I got older instead of keeping a job that paid the bills. Would have been better off selling the house and having a life style a starting cops pay would cover.

Today's Featured Article - Gatherin of the Orange - by Rick Nikolich. In July of 1998 I was talking to fellow Allis Chalmers collector Mike Schilling about the annual "Gathering of The Orange" AC show coming up in August of 1999. He got this wild idea that we should get a convoy of AC tractors and drive them from Charlotte, Michigan 105 miles to LaGrange, Indiana. ... [Read Article]
