If they are getting out the front,yes,it's open too far. One of mine has a T-handled screw on it to set it exactly. The other one is a little cheaper unit where you have to set it with a pin. It's a little harder to get that one quite right. I had a large steer get all the way in past the shoulders one time and it closed and locked. I thought I was gonna have to kill him to get him out. Found out right then and there it's better to have it set a little too far closed than too far open.
