If you have 14.4 across the terminals when running then you are definitely charging. The most you will typically see out of a 12 volt battery by itself is about 12.8 in most situations. Sounds like your battery just went shot, you can try trickle charging it and seeing if it will come back to life, but if you have already turned it in for a core then oh well. I went to start my truck last night and it would barely turn over, I guess it is time for me to get new batteries too. The previous owner put Optima red tops, but this is the second time I have had to jump it to get it started when it is cold out, so it looks like I will be making a trip to sears to buy batteries.
