Guys. C'mon. Again, too hard left and hard right, when the best solution is (as always) somehwere in the middle.

I was one of the two biggest kids in my small elementary school 30 years ago. Most other kids would have called me 'fat'. Nowadays, I would have been known as 'normal'. It's astounding to me how many kids are overwieght in my children's school.

Do we have a child obesity problem in this country? Most definitely. All in agreement? Good. Let's move on.

30 years ago, when I went to lunch every day, you either brought your own lunch, or you bought the one-and-only lunch provided. No extras. Maybe an extra milk, if they had any left over.

No. Extras. And no vending machines at all. We brought our lunch money in on Monday, which bought a strip of lunch tickets, then we ripped one off every day and took it to lunch with us.

My kids have a freakin' school-issued credit card to buy their lunches. And if you don't specifically tell the lunch room what things your kid can or can't buy, they will be allowed to buy whatever they want. And there are extras. Whole extra lunches, extra desserts (including ice cream), extra drink. And pizza. There's always pizza. If you don't like what's on the menu, you can have pizza. 5 days a week. And there's a vending machine right in the cafeteria so you never have to be without your favorite sugary snack.

Do you think all this is contributing to the problem? We need to cut back on the extras. Like not have them at all. And no vending machines. One lunch choice a day. If you don't like it, bring your own.

By the way, I went on to lose 35 pounds while I was in the 5th grade. That was to deal so I could get a 3 wheeler.

Today's Featured Article - Chores - by Frank Young. The ceaseless passing of time! It is at once our friend and our enemy. It measures our progress and it makes us old. Like most features of our life, few things are all good or all bad, and most such judgments depend on our own perspective or viewpoint. In our particular hobby, we enjoy the nostalgic return to the days of our youth as we recreate many of the scenes that took place on the family farm that served as the stage for the first few acts of the play that is our live ...
