You know, growing up as a kid, Mom always had us bring in a few of the good hedge apples and she'd put one in each room in a pie pan behind a sofa or whatever to run off or kill spiders. Did it work? I'm not sure, but every year she had us pick them and bring them home. And how did she know they were ready? Because when they got ripe, especially over ripe and mushy, we used to throw them at each other, and SPLAT on the back of the shirts, side of the head, and you know it. When we'd walk into the house with that gluey stuff all over us, she'd hand us a pail and send us back out to not come back home until we had enough for each room and some spares.
