We bought a 2009 Escape new in May 2009 and now have 21000 miles on it and love it. We opted for 2wd and 2.5L 4 cylinder for fuel economy and get 26-28 mpg. The 2wd doesn't concern me because it is a FWD vehicle and it can get around as well as any 4wd on the road. I had a 2 inch reciever put on it and pull a little utility trailer every now and again. It does well pulling the trailer as long as long as you use your brain and don't expect 80 mph down the interstate or overload the trailer. Ford upgraded the powertrain in 2009, adding HP, torque, AND fuel economy over the 2008 and older models. They did this by going to a 6 speed transmission and reworking the engine.
What I wouldn't buy is a Jeep Liberty. My F-I-L and Bro-I-L both bought Diesel Liberties and hate them. They're extremely unreliable and don't get near the fuel economy they should with a diesel engine. My Bro-I-L got so sick of his that he dumped it and bought a different vehicle.
