My wife's parents are on their second Escape with zero problems. Both are retired Ford engineers and supposedly get good deals.
First was a 2001 with the 3 liter V6. They put 70K miles on it and it only had a few nuisance "check engine light" issues. Each time, it had something to do with the fuel filler cap. Northern Michigan has no MV inspection, so it wasn't an issue. We took many trips in it, with 5 people and a dog - and it got 26 MPG. When it came to trade, I wanted to buy it , but the dealer offered them too much trade in money.
They now have a 2009 with the 2.5 four-banger. We just took a trip, again with 5 people and a dog. All kinds of power and it got 29 MPG. 20K miles on it and so far only one problem you can't blame on Ford. The old man backed into a telephone pole (gently). It bent the back hatch a little. Body shop insisted on replacing the hatch instead of repairing and a new 2009 hatch is not available anymore. So, a 2010 hatch was put on, with a cost over $2000.
Both were/are great rigs and I'd love to have one. I'm just too cheap and waiting for my in-laws to pass one off to us.
Father-in-law also still has his 95 F150, 4WD with a 300 six. He plows snow with it. 90K miles and only repairs are . . . a rusted out oil pan on the engine - and rear universal joints on the driveshaft. I wouldn't mind having that truck either. Nice simple rig. Body still looks perfect. Engine oil pan is the only part that got rusty.
