Most likely the upper bearing set in the steering box has failed from lack of lubrication. The fix is replacing the bearing, and probably the bottom set also because the upper bearing assembly breaks apart when it fails and drops metal debris into the bottom set.
The fix is not particularly difficult if you have some mechanical skills and parts are under $100 if I remember correctly.
And no, pumping it full of 'corn head' grease will not fix it.
