had to replace the head gasket on a early d17 diesel. where are the timing marks on this so i can check the valves??? thanks in advance....

I&T service manuals show an easy 2 step procedure for adjusting the valves. It consists of rolling the engine over until cylinder #1, and then cylinder #6 are in the rocking position, where the exhaust valve is all but completely closed and the intake valve is just beginning to open, then you can adjust half the valves in each position

I believe a general rule is when the exhaust just cracks open adjust the intake. When the intake is open and begins to close check the exhaust.

If all you did was the head, you don't need the timing marks to set the valves. Just roll the engine over till the valves are fully closed and adjust lash.

I do it same way as 4wdtom describes,( ensures without a doubt you are adjusting valve clearance on base lobe of Cam, and if you get interupted less likey to forget were you are at!) also follow firing order for less turning of engine. I think you have to take rock shaft out of the way to retourqe head after run in so you will get to do it a couple of times!
