Allis chalmers D 17 knock in the rear end.

Hello! I have an allis D 17 and it has some sort of knocking in the rear end. Has anyone had this sound or knows what it is and how to fix it?

I cannot get your link to work. Do you have a loose wheel. In my 20+ years running a tire service truck, I saw that several times.

The only link that works is the third message I wrote, the one message with two links does not work it is the message below that one. And no I dont have a loose wheel because I was not driving it during the video.

It would be really nice to know the AGE of the D-17. I assume it is NOT a series 4 model. I also assume it is a gasoline model ?? If you have a "knock" in the rear end when the tractor isn't even moving, does it make the knocking noise when the foot clutch is pushed all the way down ???

It is a late series one, gasoline, and you can hear it when
the clutch is in or out, it does it literally all the time low,
high, up or down a hill, whichever gear, it the sound
speeds up when the tractor is sped up, the rear end is full
of oil, but it has to warm up for the sound to be
recognizable. Did you watch the video I sent you Dan
clearly hear it on there as I sped up the tractor and I was
sitting still there with the clutch out.

I cannot open anything you've posted. If it makes a knocking noise when the foot clutch is pushed all the way down, you have a serious engine problem. I'll bet you are hearing it in the fenders, as it echos there. *** I wonder if you are hearing the proverbial center main bearing "thump". This thumping/pounding noise occurs when the main bearings are worn. It also occurs when the ignition timing is advanced too far. You could try retarding the timing a little bit at a time to see if it improves things or not. Place a scribe mark where the distributor base meets the governor housing, so you KNOW exactly where the timing is at now. Rotate the distributor so the top mark (on the distributor flange) moves to the rear about 1/8" and see what happens. This change also equates to rotating the distributor clock-wise looking down on it from the top. The more information, the better. How long have you been in possession of this tractor?? It used to be quiet and now its not ?? Or its always done it since you have been the operator ??

Okay I will try to do that I bought this about 3 months ago
and it had a dead battery so I could not start it when I
bought it. It had this sound as soon as I got it started for
the first time.

I have an iPhone and I could view your video in the link. I however am not an Allis guy. Take a photo of the part you show vibrating in the video and post that using the ..Choose files.. button down low in the New post or Reply page. I really do not think you have an engine bearing problem. I think maybe something has come loose on your clutch. Maybe you could simply describe the location of the vibrating part which looks like a tin cover to me. In the link is the online parts diagram for your tractor, however it is not for a Series IV tractor if that is what you have and not being and Allis guy I am not sure of the differences. The ..up.. button and the ..Table of Contents.. at the top gets you back to the list of sections to view. Making. quick run through I could not find the part you were showing.
Edit to add: The noise you hear has nothing to do with ignition detonation, no need to mess with that. To others I was able to view it through the live link on Classic View on my iPhone, it came through as a ..shared video.. Sorry, if this edit messed up my text line margins.

I figured out what he shows in his video. He actually focuses the camera on what I believe is the right brake cover just to the right of the seat. If I am seeing this correctly it is part #2 on the linked parts page. However the diagram shows it flat where his bumps up above the gasket surface and from what I see the left and right covers look to be connected to each other by a piece that sets behind the seat unless the diagram shows the part backwards. I will attach stills from his video. The 2nd picture shows the very end of the video he pans towards the left (right on the tractor)and it shows the axle bolting on to the housing the line on the right of the still is the edge of the brake cover, so I am pretty sure I have this right. His video was taken from a point in front of the right axle looking back. By the noise I hear, in the video I do not believe that even someone who knows far little about tractors would go looking for a noise in the engine when it is this loud in the rear end. I thought maybe they have a piston type hydraulic pump like a Massey which I believe could make a noise like this, but the parts diagram shows a regular gear pump. Does the PTO turn a shaft back there all the time? If so maybe something has came apart on that, the tractor is not being driven or moved during the video.

No. 2 part in question

I can only give good advice when I have good and accurate information to work with. The tractors factory hydraulic pump is a piston pump located inside the belly directly underneath the fuel tank. If the two levers to the left of the steering wheel are clear UP, that pump may be pumping all the time. BUT, the poster says it makes the noise if the foot clutch is clear UP or clear DOWN. That hydraulic pump stops when the foot clutch is clear DOWN/DEPRESSED fully. The gear pump on an older D-17 is a lube pump ( for the power director clutch) and normally makes no noise and if it did, it too stops when the foot clutch is fully depressed. If the tractor makes the noise sitting still AND with the foot clutch fully depressed, the only thing turning is the engine !! If this tractor has some sort of "add-on" live hydraulic pump driven by the engine, I would have no idea because there's no information telling me that.

EDIT: Doing a little research on this "knocking noise" I find this same poster back on September 14th, 2022 was complaining about the same problem, and probably the same D-17 tractor. He said it was in the rear end then too.

x2. If it is making the same noise, setting still, whether the clutch is pushed down (disengaged) or not pushed (engaged), the noise is not in the rear end. When the clutch pedal is pushed the disc is disconnected and everything driven by the disc is stopped, the engine is the only thing turning, everything from the clutch disc back is not turning or he would also be complaining about problems getting it in gear. The DR has given the facts, based on the info provided.

allisnut123,

There is a size limit of 7.5 mb on pictures and videos in a post, that is for one or the total of several if more than one is added into a post.

I opened the third one you posted, and it is 12.5 plus mb. If the first two are that size each, they won't post. Just so you are aware if you want to try posting them or others another time.

Here is a portion of the third video (about 5.75 mb).

Yup. I hear a noise all right. Now, if I'm given correct and accurate details and information, maybe there could be an accurate diagnosis. One more time: when the foot clutch is depressed fully all the way DOWN, there is nothing turning anywhere, except the engine. SO, is it making this noise when the foot clutch is fully depressed down and the engine running?? YES or NO. ***** With the engine running, the transmission in ANY GEAR, the hand clutch in neutral, holding the brakes hard ( so tractor cannot move) and the foot clutch is UP your foot not touching the pedal, does it make the noise? YES or NO.***** With the engine running, the hand clutch locked in LOW range, the transmission in NEUTRAL and foot clutch UP, brakes held hard, does it make the noise ?? YES or NO. ******* Either final drive will only make noise when the tractor moves, not sitting still. Same for the ring & pinion and differential...only when moving do they turn.
