5020 Allis Chalmers

Hello, I'm hoping you guys can help me out! I recently got a 5020 Allis Chalmers. When I got it I was told the starter was on its way out, but I could get it to start still. I did a oil change, oil filter change, filled it with coolant, and did a fuel filter change. I'm not mechanically inclined at all, so I'm learning, but I didn't realize you are supposed to put some fuel in the fuel filter before starting, and I am recently learning how to bleed the lines. Thanks to a post and a picture Dick L posted, I found the bleed screw, got it bled there. I bled it until there was no more bubbles and a stream of fuel came out, I let the stream run for about 2-3 seconds just to confirm I got all the air. I also had the starter rebuilt when I did this. I got the starter back on, it was cranking, but not firing still and then I saw a spark from the negative terminal on the battery and now I can't get it to crank at all anymore. Any ideas on what I can do before I give up and call a shop? Thank you!

It sounds like the battery terminal needs cleaned and or tightened. Use a wire brush and try to get it shinny clean. I am not familiar with a 5020 but if a mechanical fuel pump, pump on it with bleed screw in. this may force some fuel into the fuel lines. Hopefully Dr Allis or someone else is familiar with 5020 system. Don't get discouraged it's probably not a big problem.

I've got those loose, just no luck getting it to crank to get fuel there at all :/ Not sure if it's a safety switch that went bad, or if the starter I just had rebuilt burnt up, or what it could be

I would clean the battery cables like 16-30
stated also remove and clean where the
ground battery cable attaches to the frame.
Be sure all battery connections are very
clean and tight.

I did as you guys recommended, got them all cleaned, finished bleeding the lines, and now it runs great! Would one of you guys mind explaining to me what happened on the lines that they needed cleaned, even though the battery was brand new? I don't understand why that fixed it 😅

I don't want to be a kill joy but I would bet dirty cable connection was all that was wrong with the starter. I thought my battery was bad or the starter. I put my jump
battery directly on the starter and it was fine. I took a set of jumper cables from the battery to the starter and it started right up. Found the bolt on the ground cable
had rusted all but a little holding it on. Twisted off easy when I went to tighten it.

Battery terminals will get sort of a glaze on them that cuts way down on their ability to conduct current. You can buy a battery cable tool that cleans up the battery post and the terminal for about $5 well worth having.

Please excuse my tagging onto your post as I am an AC 5020 new owner. Regarding the air filter two quick questions: There's a 2" pipe sticking out the front, uncovered. Doesn't this allow soot to be sucked in? I found a small Fram 2" air filter and fitted it to that pipe...I don't see what harm that would do. Right? Also, as best I can determine the Fram CAK256 is an exce3llent replacement air filter. Right? Thanks in advance for your comments, Ralph

You would help yourself by starting your own post and fully describe your needs. This site uses two different views. Modern View brings old posts to the "top". People using Modern view will see your post and the original post you are tagged onto, so they see the "whole" story related to your post. People using the Classic view only see your post as a reply ("Re") to a post, if they see it at all, none of that original post shows since Classic does not bring old posts to the top like Modern does; they stay in the list where they were posted in time, where your post shows as current. People, using Classic, can swap over to Modern to see the original post, but likely many will not bother to do that.

Thanks Jim...I will certainly refrain from tagging on to another post...was just trying to save time.
