My (new to me) 5020 has a 2" dia. pipe extending about 4" from the front of the air breather...it seems that soot can be sucked in so I found a Fram 2" filter and attached it to the unprotected opening (see pic)...it should be OK. Right? Also, my research indicated a Fram CAK256 is the correct air filter measuring 10 in. long by 4" dia. Right? One last item...I cut 6" from the iop of my exhaust to fit the tractor under my lean-to. Though I may get a bit of blowback exhaust I don't think this affects performance adversely. Right? Thanks in advance for your comments, Ralph

That 'restriction' input is what I was afraid of. I'll test run t that way and remove it at the least sign of a problem. Thanks.

Looks to me like a solution in search of a problem.

Or is the engine in need of help and belching soot?

Wore Out...I think you're right and am removing my 'modification'. Actually the original design (open inlet) is no different than a car or truck in that it allows the engine to breathe. Its just that I saw a picture of this engine (Toyosha S125) somewhere with an elbow extension on that intake nozzle. Its just a case of don't fix the unbroken :)

I have seen a number of other tractors over the years with a similar ''open'' air intake tube pulling screened air from ahead of the radiator with no apparent issues.

Do the radiator screen(s) fit well, and is the area between the hood and the radiator sealed up with a foam strip or other method?

Yes...I replaced the seal recently and think I will leave as is and let the main filter do its job...thanks
