Allis 180 Hydraulic Pump Noise

Hi folks,

The post below mentioning 180 hydraulic problems got me thinking. I was wondering: How much noise do these pumps typically make when
everything's well and good? The pump on my 180 is louder than any other tractor's hydraulic pump I've been around (with the possible
exception of the White 2-105 and its piece of crap Vickers pump, but that's another story). It's not crazily loud, but certainly louder than
most other tractors. They hydraulics all seem to work ok, except that at very, very low RPM the power steering is a little jerky - especially
when cold.

Is this something to worry about? I'm not exactly looking for unnecessary or make-work projects, but if there's any chance it's going to
cause issues I'd rather deal with it now than have it fail half way through baling a field. The hydraulic filter/fluid has been changed and
replaced with Hy-Guard pretty recently.

My One-Eighty acts exactly the same way. I think some of the sound is not so much the pump but the power steering. When I'm actively turning it's not so loud but when I stop moving the wheel it gets louder. Mine is a 1969 gas model. My 1980 185 doesn't make the same noises.

It's been a long time since I've been on a 180-185. I don't recall a hydraulic noise. But I've never run a gas model. I believe there's a suction screen over the oil manifold under the belly of the tractor. That's the only other thing I can think to check, that you haven't done.

Thanks folks for the replies. Good to hear mine's not the only one that acts like that. It is a late-model gas version - similar to SkyHigh's and I have an aftermarket universal muffler on it which is very, very quiet. That probably exacerbates how noticeable the pump noise is.

Totally different tractor but on our Farmall 656 the hydraulics made a terrible buzzing noise that got worse under load. That tractor was overhauled twice and then had another engine installed in the 20,000+ hours put on it - and the hydraulics still buzzed annoyingly loud when it was finally sent down the road. I guess if your going to have something not quite right - always being bathed in oil will make it last.

Hydraulic pumps on 180/185's don't really make any noise at all unless the oil is cold or the pump is cavitating (sucking air). A gas tractor engine is quieter than a diesel, so maybe a little more noise. Typical hydraulic humm when steering, but not annoying if things are correct.
