We bought this 180 at a consignment auction - we had spoken to the owner through the auctioneer - it was represented as a tractor that they had outgrown and didn't need as they had moved up to a cabbed tractor for winter feeding. We looked it over and knew about the hydraulic cylinders leaking and thought they were being pretty upfront about the tractor and it did not appear to have the abuse most feed tractors have. We bought it ($2200 with a loader and chains) and brought it home. First time to really see it running - NO PTO action at all. A lot of cursing later we started taking it apart.
Slid the PTO shaft out the back and it was very clean - like someone else had recently pulled it - cleaned it and put it back. We thought - that's not good. Then we dropped the PTO housing and the smaller drive gear was laying in the pan. Surprisingly everything appeared to be intact - neither of the gears had damage. As near as we can tell all we have to do is put it back together and use some loctite on the nut to hold it this time.
The pan had NOT been opened up in years with all the safety nuts in place - we think the PTO quit - they slid the PTO shaft out the rear and then put it back together without going any further. Can it be that simple? We were worried we would be looking at a tractor split.
We were expecting a cLutch in this pan - it looked like this one:
