188d fuel filter

New to me 631, engine has yellow paint peeking out from under the orange so it's likely not original. Whoever did the work decided to simplify the fuel filter setup. Runs like a top, but I'm guessing the water separation will be... subpar. My question is, should I try to find an original fuel filter setup, or is there a good aftermarket option?

I FOR SURE WOULD NOT run it with that for a fuel filter system!!!! Check salvage yards for the correct one or Diesel Tech may have an idea for something else

That dipstick is a later style, and does not appear in our 630 parts book. If nothing else is available, I would put a Gasoline
Sediment Bowl Assembly at the tank outlet. It would collect the larger trash and separate out the water.

You are correct, that is woefully inadequate to protect that pump, the system that was on all those older 188s was a great system and I would recommend renewing it to OEM design. Very effective against water and easy to change, I have done hundreds. I doubt that the inline even has a fine enough micron rating size for trash the other system has.

Get rid of that PRONTO! Find the original two filter base or at least get the later Roosa/Stanadyne square clip on filter base assembly like lots of other engines use.
What's on there now WILL wreck the pump hydraulic head soon, if it's not damaged already.

I will be going to the salvage yard on Monday to hopefully find a fuel filter assembly. Thanks for all the helpful replies. I wonder how long the poor girl has been running this way. Hopefully not long...

The 188d was used in the 630, 530, and 430. I have all three. My 630 has a filter directly under the tank. My 530 has the two filter system Dieseltech mentions mounted on
the side of the engine. My 430 has a single filter mounted on the side of the engine. All four filer elements are different.

With the same engine, it's strange that they wouldn't have the same filter. We're they updated through the years, as in a 430, 530 and 630 of the same model year would have the same filter?
