Case 580B power steering not holding

I have a recently acquired case 580 B. It is well worn to say the least, but it does what I need it to do. I have not spent a lot of time on it yet, but as I drive it and turn the steering wheel, the wheels turn but do not stay put in the turn. I have to keep turning the wheel to keep making the turn or they straighten out on the own. My first guess is that the steering cylinders are shot and do not hold pressure to keep the tractor in a turn. But, is there something else I should be looking for, before I start to tear down or replace the cylinders?

That sounds like a cylinder issue, if one internal seal lets go you you will have your issue, reseal both cylinders as the both will be worn, to get the rods out of the barrel's it is not the conventional way of the gland been screwed in, first clean and have a good look, remove the spring clip from the outside collar, using a blunt punch tap the collar into the barrel, remove another spring clip from the wall of the barrel, you can now pull the rod out and fit the seals in the conventional way.

Thanks, Matt

I pulled both steering cylinders (finally). Put the o ring kit in I bought from YT. Must have been the wrong one because I am missing an O ring for the piston heads. There were 2 rings in the piston groove, at least there were as I took it apart. Is this right? The cylinders were previously painted with orange paint as well as the injector pump. Were some models of the 580 B originally painted in orange? Also, the is no dual action tube on these cylinders as I have seen on various replacements and parts diagrams. What is the proper o ring setup for the piston head? Do I even have correct cylinders?

The correct cylinders are duel acting cylinders piped in series, I have never seen any other set up, when I say piped in series means there are two lines coming from the orbital valve (steering box) if it is standard cylinders each cylinder will have two connections, one line will go to the rod end of one cylinder, the other line goes to the bottom end of the other cylinder, there is a line connecting the two cylinders together to complete the circuit, you need the right seal kits, nothing else will do

Thanks for the info. These are the power steering cylinders. What do you think? Notice the orange paint? This was the original color of the tractor. I could not find the serial data plate anywhere so I had to guess whether it was an early or late model. View attachment IMG_1279.jpeg

Those cylinders look to be a lot heavier than any I have seen on a B, nevertheless the cylinders look good and should work as they have been, the seals on the piston are the one to hold the steering in position, the seals must be good there, someone may have upgraded the cylinders as the parts list only show the lighter type., I would get the seals to suit those cylinders and, reseal them and try again.
