Cat D6C Engine Identification

I have a 1963 Cat D6C that I am trying to pin down the exact engine in it. There is a huge amount of contradicting info I have come across. Here is what I know.

1963
SN 76A973, From the engine. The one on the dash is missing and it has a winch so I cant see the one on the frame.
Turbo'ed
Tin Valve cover
Electric Start


I know its a D333, but is it a D333c, D333t, D333tc or some other designation that I have come across trying to figure it out. I cannot find any hard trustable information on how to visually identify it and the more I read and look into it, the less I trust the info I can find. I can find allot of info about the difference between the D333's and the 3306, but I would like good info about the different setups of the D333. The biggest issue parts. I am going to need to pull the head and I want to get all the gaskets and little bits on hand before I do, but I want to be 100% sure I am going to be ordering the correct parts. Its putting pressure into the cooling system and leaking some compression out from around the injectors.

I do have an email out to J-E-N-S-A-L-E-S to get all the books that go to this specific machine. Will see what they can get me.
 
The first three digits of the serial number are called their
prefix. Its old enough Im assuming 76a is your machine
serial number. Find engine tag and those first three digits will
give you a lot of info

Yes, the first 3 are the prefix, it's a first year machine so the engine doesn't have its own serial number on it.
 
I found the microfiche that matches. If Its a 76a but that
makes it a d6 no c just plain d6 but the last prefix of D6
Looking for the parts manual to find an actual engine number
the service manual doesnt mention engine model number
 
Originally heres a picture of my micro fiche. I think what would make it a d333c is going to be a slightly bigger bore Im a little unsure if it had a turbo or not I think that was supposed to be a later thing.

Thank you for the info. I am having a hard time reading that pic. I figure its a side shot of the block, I can't get much more than that.

You wouldn't happen to have the part numbers for every gasket from the head gasket up would you????? :D

I am fairly certain it is a C, the old guy at the cat dealer here was able to find it in his reference book, but I couldn't get much more from him than the year. Ill have to get some coffee's and go visit him for a longer period of time soon.

Going to do a photo dump of what I have of it.

So I believe the old head gasket number is 4m-2956 Ill look
for the rest and dig through the engine paper parts manuals
tonight I dont have shelves yet. Often caterpillar is going to
have number stamped directly on whatever you take out so
sometimes its best to tear into it because people switched
stuff around sometimes. While the heads off get it checked
either by pressure or magnaflux. I think they fixed some stuff
in that regard right before or when it jumped to 3306
 
So there is a 9M4739 that should be a kit with gaskets for
everything up top and possibly also an oil pan gasket
Ill try dumping some photos out of the book but I think that is
what your going to want for a kit number

I hadn't been able to track down the number for the correct book yet. That makes a huge difference. Jensales doesn't have it unfortunately. I would like to be able to find one I could down load.
 
You wouldn't be able to get me the part numbers for the injector parts and the turbo cartridge would you?

I found a parts book on ebay but I still haven't heard if it's even shipped yet.

Heres the injectors. 4f-5628 appears to be injector no seals I
would assume 3s-6638 to be everything because they are 56
bucks a piece aftermarket. Hopefully your turbo has an
assembly number plate on it because theres 5 options

I think I got 90% or better of everything I need for it ordered. Parts should be in Thursday of next week. I'm still waiting on the parts manual for it to show up unfortunately. There is a couple more parts I want to verify before getting them, but they will be easy to source locally. All the filters and glow plugs for the most part.

You've probably figured it out by now but that is a D6C with D333aT engine (4-1/2 bore. D333c's came later (4-3/4 bore). D333a's have belt driven water pump, D333c's have gear drive water pump. Be sensitive about water temp as they were somewhat prone to cracking heads.

Thank you for the info about the water pumps. I had not confirmed what the difference was in them yet.

You are correct, it does have a belt driven pump. The head showed up yesterday but I wasn't able to get to it and look at it until this evening. It is the wrong head.......... I have to wait until Monday before I can get ahold of them and start the process to exchange it.
