Hi guys I purchased a Ford backhoe with a spun rod bearing I've got the engine out the piston is sticking out of the block 12 thousands I've got it down at the Machine Shop the where on the cylinders is 3 thousands they will not bore this block due to pin holes so the only other option is sleeves and then they will have to Deck the block. Piston protrusion is already Max according to the book. Do you guys know what my options are now?

I've been the Dog and Pony Show before. Don't waste your money on that block. find another, sleeve it and be done with it. be sure
to rebush those rod ends and have them honed. You don't want the pistons to hit the head. It ain't pretty what could happen. Any used
engine block I get has to be sleeved. I'd hate to put it all together and have it cylinder coolant leak in a week or two. Amazing what
happens to cylinders when running diesel cylinder pressures on a thin cylinder wall. Sealed liners like Deere , Cat, Cummins have
always had this problem. I like to add a spin on coolant conditioner filter so it changes the coolant ph.so future damage is minimal.
Or you can add coolant conditioner to radiator as per bottle instructions. I've got mine from NAPA in the past.

Sleeve the block and take a few thou off the piston
crowns until they are within spec. If the pistons are
in decent shape, the sleeves can be sized to fit the
pistons. Note that shrinking the bore in this manner,
you will have to pay close attention to ring end gap.

If it only has .003 wear home the cylinders and put new rings on the old pistons
well hello Destroke
I haven't spoken to you in a couple years hopefully you are doing good.
Yes I have been debating that but I'm definitely putting new Pistons the motor had 6,000 hours. I bought the backhoe from a guy who claimed it was a stuck injector and I thought it was until I tore into it
The guy at the Machine Shop told me if I was going to run it every day it wouldn't hold up. So I don't know

Thanks for the reply. That's probably what I'm going to have to do. No matter which way I go its going to be very expensive just the Machine Shop is pushing 1600.

Thanks for the reply. So you're saying get another block and sleeve it? Why not just sleeve this block there's a possibility if I get another block that ------ and protrusion maybe the same. This motor has never been into before.

Hi Danny, it has been a while, what size backhoe did you get that has a 268 engine
I recently purchased a 268 turbo engine for a project I plan to start on soon
Is this a turbo engine? The non turbo has a piston protrusion of .011 min to .023 max, the turbo engine has a shorter piston with a protrusion of .000 min to .012 max
If it s a non turbo they can skim a few thousands off to make it flat but tell them not to take more than .005 because you don t know what the new pistons will protrude

I ended up with a 655d non-turbo naturally
aspirated engine. I got the machine shop
to go ahead and put sleeves as far as the
Pistons I will turn them down if necessary
myself.
Do you know of a good Place supplier to
purchase a rebuild kit from? I'm not sure
if you can get anything made in America
anymore. I have purchased engine kits in
the past from Cross Creek Yesterday's
Tractor and a place up in Oregon Quality
diesel. If you know of a good place let me
know thank you
