Ford 268 balance shaft no marks on the crank gear.

Hey guys I'm finally getting this engine back together after getting the right bearings.
I have the engine on TDC ready to install the balance shaft gears
but there's not a mark on the flywheel teeth on either crankshaft the old one or the new one front or back. Could someone please tell me a procedure or what I need to do? Thank you very much.
I've actually looked with magnification on both sides of the teeth there's not a mark anywhere.

This is the only Mark I see and this on the casting of the crankshaft not the gear itself and it kind of looks like the Centerline of the crank.[img:da6ea63f89][/img:da6ea63f89]

Well I guess I'll just line my two dots up on the balance shafts and put it in.
I don't know anything else to do.

The best I can offer is you could try posting your question on the Ford Forum. There are likely more people there familiar with the 268.

It looks like you have posted about this 4 times in an hour and it sounds like you are moving on for lack of an answer from someone. Don't get discouraged, answers are not always instantaneous on a forum, the right person has to see it. good luck.

Can you post a picture of the balancer (should be two weights geared together) and mounts to the bottom of the block. Also, the model and year of the tractor. Typically these are indexed with the balancer weights facing away from the crankshaft when a pair of pistons are at TDC.

I will be gone tomorrow but can answer when I get back. If you need an answer quicker, any good Ford mechanic should know.

It's a 1994 655d 268 diesel engine. The
balance shafts also have two dots to line
up the weights, that's not a problem.The
problem comes in with the line on the
driven gear that supposed to mate with the
crankshaft mark.

That engine should have what is called a "Lanchester Balancer", which works to reduce secondary forces. It consists of two balancers which are driven at twice crankshaft speed. With a pair of pistons at TDC, the weighted bob of each balancer must face away from the crankshaft.

Assuming the engine block is mounted on an engine stand; rotate the crankshaft until the outer (1 and 4) pair of pistons are at TDC. Now rotate the engine block in the engine stand to allow access to the crankshaft. Index the driven gear of the two balance weight assembly to the drive gear on the crankshaft. The bob weights must face up and away from the crankshaft. That's it, done.

To check your work; rotate the crankshaft 180 degrees. Now the center (2 and 3) pair of pistons will be at TDC. Verify that the two bob weights are once again in the same position and face away from the crankshaft. Note - the balance weights are driven at twice crankshaft speed.

To Clarify; "the bob weights must face away from the crankshaft". With the engine installed in the tractor and a pair of pistons at TDC, the bob weights must face vertically down (to the floor/ground), i.e. away from the crankshaft.

Thank you sir for this information too bad we can't reply with a thumbs up.
