9 Speed Add On In A 47 Farmall H ?

Working on a 47 H for a Friend, it has what is Supposed to be a 9 Speed, But I don't know which Brand it is, I heard they made the M & W, the Heisler and Behlen made one, this one has a knob, like the PTO on a 1 and 1/2 truck had bolted to the Hydraulic lift handle bracket with a cable that goes in right side of housing about 2 inches forward of the back Hydraulic line, in line with the fill cap. Cable then bends towards the back and goes into front right side of Trans. below Coupler with an adjustment there. It's all the way in and is stuck. Anyone know anything about these? Owner would like to have some Info on this as to what kind it is and if we should try to see if it works. Only One I ever saw was a M & W and had a lever to actuate. He is ready to sell Tractor, Thought it might bring more with a working 9 speed, has all new Tires. Gene

If the knob moves in and out at all, the issue is likely inside. If it seems stuck, the cable may be frozen, an outside issue! Jim

I have an M&W 9 speed in my Farmall M. Like Jim says the cable could be rusted and not operable. I had a speedometer shop build a new cable for me. However the issue then is connecting it. As I recall the transmission cover has to come off to get to the location where the cable is connected to the shifting lever inside the transmission. The connection is made with the cable running through an eye bolt on the lever and a set screw tightening on the cable. The set screw can get loose and the cable slips. That is my setup. Yours may be different.

I do not have one nor have I been around one this is just info off the internet. The M & Ws used both a left and right shift lever design. Heisler used a lever. In the 1st attached post D Slater has a post describing these designs three with photos. As he posted there the early M & Ws used a cable such as you have. The 2nd post from another forum has additional information. Behlen did make 9 speeds as well but I think they were far less common. Behlen made a greater amount of overdrives for JD 2 cylinders.

Cable has a nut that screws on the OD to retain it at front wall of transmission on center housing side. Cable ID is clamped to 9 speed shift lever inside transmission housing. Should be able to remove the cable from shifter after the pulley gear box or cover is removed. Then screw nut out by reaching from bottom of center housing. When cable is removed you can check shift lever function. Like shifting the transmission may need to roll things a little to complete shift. Picture of parts from a M. Not exact for a H but close.
