Why is a MD Hood Longer Than a M Hood?

I was given what I thought to be a M hood from which I
will remove metal sections for repairing our rusted Super
M hood. I then noticed the exhaust hole on the other side
with the addition of a gas starting tank hole. Laying them
side by side the MD hood is about 2 longer. This is not a
problem for what I need from it but Im just curious why it
is.

The engine in a diesel is very different than the Gas engines. the engine is longer for solidity and to accommodate 5 main bearings on the crank, compared to 3 on the gassers. Jim

Because the diesel upper bolster mounting holes to frame rails are placed to move radiator and grill mounting close to 1-1/2 to 1/58 inches more from fuel tank. Results in different hood, worm shaft lengths and a few other things. Even though the bolsters may not look exactly the same the SMTA went to the diesel type bolster size on all tractors. That's why a gas and diesel hood is the same length on those. One of the changes on a gas SMTA was the use of a deeper fan encloser like already in use on a SW-6 and if memory not failing a regular W-6 also.
