Electronic ignition

In an old lowwwwwwwww compression,,,,,,,,,, lowwwwwwwwww RPM,,,,,,,,,,,, regular gas (NOT exotic fuels or extreme high octane) type of farm tractor engine, I personally doubt conversion (if all else is well with the old stock ignition) from mechanical points to elec coil current switching WOULD MAKE ALL THAT MUCH (perhaps slight??) DIFFERENCE IN HP OUTPUT. One hears antecdotal evidence of improved starting.

NOTE This is ONLY my untested not verified OPINION...I have no data, no before and after HP tests, no scientific evidence to prove or disprove my OPINION and if anyone has actual performance testing data and results please post the data and test results.

NOTE I am NOT speaking for or against elec coil current switching over mechanical points. There are advantages as well as disadvantages of each

John T I look forward to other OPINIONS and maybe someone has scientific test results and data to research and post ???? Hope some mechanical engineers can post some evidence and THEIR opinions ???

just as an opinion, i dont think so. higher octane fuel might maybe but cant even tell on that. its just a go with the flow thing as things are always improving. vehicles now have one coil for each cylinder, not one coil for all cylinders. just from what i have seen you get better spark plug life with the fuel injection.

Assuming the OEM points/condenser/coil are in good shape and adjusted, the answer is no.

The advantage of electronic is there's no maintenance required, and no loss of performance as points wear/go out of adjustment. And electronic MAY provide easier starting on a poorly tuned engine.

On the other hand electronic is subject to reduced tolerance to heat/moisture, and to sudden, complete failure from overvoltage/reversed polarity - like while jump starting.

Higher octane gas provides no additional power whatsoever on low compression engine (all high test does is reduce knock/pre-ignition on high compression engines)

I would say no. And if so, it'd be so slight you wouldn't notice a thing.

That said, installing electronic ignition /replacing faulty points and what not, by doing so you are tuning it up and eliminating any missing, your engine will now be running right and you would then notice a difference. But you could aquire the same thing by tuning up your tractor and putting in new points and what not.

Bottom line is, electronic ignition is just a newer type of system. In my opinion, not needed on the older tractors. I won't be converting any of mine. If I did anything, I'd convert some of my distributor tractors back to a magneto. Hotter spark, and no battery needed. I bet you don't gain that with an electronic ignition (the no battery needed part).

I kind of don't see the need to change out the system so you don't have to fart with points anymore. Points aren't really that big of deal. Maybe troublesome if a tractor sits for a long spell. But that can be expected, right along with other things such as dead battery, low tires, and bad gas. You don't want to fight those headaches, then don't let your tractor just sit. That's simple enough, isn't it??

How could it increase power? It's just a different method of getting fire to the exact same pistons and valves......and it won't fix any preexisting conditions. If it ain't running right on points it won't run right in EI.......

My answer to that is no! I put My Super-M farmall on the dyno and got her up to 45 HP. Then added electronic ign. -- still 45 HP. took out the dist.and overhauled the mechanical advance and gained 1 HP.now it was up to 46 HP. took the head off and gave it a valve job and then it went up to 48 HP. switched it to roller rockers and it is now running a steady 52 HP This testing was all done on the dyno with veriable timing and carb. adjustments I pulled it at the Clay County Fair in Spencer Iowa and got first place in the 6500lb. class by 25 feet. The lugging power never give up . Still had power to spare. Roy from northwest Iowa
