TO-20 starters

I have gone through two DB Electric starters on my TO-20 since October 2022. Yes, they were 6 volt starters on 12 volts. I have run 6 volt starters on 12 volts in other tractors that have lasted for years. Wonder why these are different. The tractor starts easily and quickly, so no long grinding on the starters. They won't warrenty the m because ov the voltage difference. Any of you have the same problems? I am trying a different brand from Ebay and specified 12 volts next. More expensive, but worth it if it lasts.

Is that American 6V or the land of Almost 6V?
I am running an old school 6V with about 80 hours on it so far.
YMMV.

.

I had a sticking starter relay burn up a new starter.

I actually had two relays stick, both new. first one both 6v and 12v. After the second relay stuck I thought it was the starter so I put the new starter in but that stuck too. I had a big snow job and forgot to knock the switch as I didn't hear the starter running. Tractor stopped half in the street.

So I found a higher amp 12v relay switch. So far no sticking. Original starter is in the tractor. New broken starter is on the bench with a rebuild kit to go back on the spares shelf.

You need to watch for the two types of relay switches out there. I suspect the parts books can be wrong.

What fails on the starter?
Good question.
The OEM starter is a Delco Remy. I put a new starter drive in mine just this week.
Who is DB Electric?

The starters just quit like something inside opens the circuit. Still get full voltage all the way to the starter . I bought the first DB Electrical starter on Amazon. When it quit, it was too late to return on Amazon. Bought the second starter direct from the DB Electrical website. It quit faster than the first one. DB Electrical said because I was was using 12 volts on their 6 volt starter, no return.
UPDATE: Today I got a shipping label to return the last starter for a full refund. Good cutomer service or they know the starter is junk?
Anyway, I got what is called a conversion 12 volt starter from another source. Should get it in the next few days.

I hope that works for you. But if not, you know just because you see 12 volts at the starter post with a volt meter doesn't mean there is enough current to run the starter. You may have starter button contact issues or poor battery cable connections. Did you ever try jumping directly from the battery to the starter, key OFF and in neutral?

New starter switch installed with last new starter. All connections cleaned at installation. Even by-passed starter switch wit Ford style starter solenoid. Battery charged and tested in my Ford tractor(started good).

My new conversion starter came in today. I did nothing new except install the new starter. Tractor started better and faster than it ever did with the two previous starters. I do believe this one will be fine.
