Clutch slipping

Me again.
On the weekend I was out slashing some grass. I noticed that the tractor seemed to lose power when going uphill or going through thick grass - yet the engine kept running without hint of stalling.

After a while I realised that the clutch was slipping. I noticed that the pedal did not have enough play, so I adjusted it as specified in the manual. After that it ran a lot better and had more power... but still it slipped occasionally.

Is it possible for a clutch to slip if the pedal is adjusted properly? Did the fact of previous slipping possibly cause the clutch to wear so that it slips? Is there anything else I should be looking at?

The tractor is a TED20.

OK, thanks.... so it looks like I need to replace the clutch.

I have already purchased one, intending to replace it a year ago because it was sticking, but it has not been so bad lately. That will also allow me to replace the seals which have been leaking for years!

Just a word of advice, Replace the pressure plate as well or you could find youself breaking the tractor in half again.

Is there any sign of oil dripping from the drain at the bottom of the bell housing? You could have a leak from the engine rear main seal or the transmission unput shaft that"s oiled your clutch plate. orthe clutch just could be worn. Either way there"s a split in your future.

I have new engine and transmission seals to go in.
Can these both be replaced when I replace the clutch, or do I need to split the tractor at 2 different places? If so, what order should I do it in?

You can do the clutch, the rear main engine seal, and the trnasmission input shaft seal with the split between the engine and transmission.
Consider replacingthe clutch throw out bearing also.

I have a 1951 TO20. Replacing clutch. Need to know how thick a NEW clutch lining is. That is, how thick is just one side of the actual friction material itself.
