Found what broke in the 4000

Was running the poultry house cleaner with my 4000 a few days after Christmas when it suddenly made a loud ripping noise, lost hydraulics and pto so I suspected the pto drive hub had failed
Got it in the shop this week to split, My guess was correct, the hub was completely stripped

Unfortunately the pto input shaft was in bad shape as well

After 22+ years the clutch disc had a bit of wear but still had some life in it
I ll be picking up a new clutch kit from my local clutch builder (Ky Clutch), they supplied this one back in 2000
Going to ask them if there s any warranty because it didn t last 25 years

Had this input shaft in parts transmission
A little cleaning with some fresh bearings and seals will take care of the shaft issue

ou don't mess around.....just get in there & gett'er done!

Looks like a bit of an engineering blunder on that drive hub. By looking at the splines on the shaft it's clear to me that they could have been a bit deeper. Fully 25% of the spline length is untouched.

How much do those two drive shafts move up and down in the tube? I have my 960 apart and I am concerned about how much they move.

I agree. If I could go back in time I would tell them to make them longer and/or larger in diameter. Think of how much more reliable that transmission would have been.

On a related note, I coat all of my SOS input shaft splines with a heavy duty spline lube (link below) to buy more time. It's the same stuff that Chelsea recommends for all of their PTO box splines. In fact, it's a good idea for all dry splines.

They will move some depending on wear in the bearings
I rebearinged this transmission back in 2003 after the lower front pto bearing failed, one of the balls got sucked up thru the gears destroying one upper gear and the front cluster. Got the gears from the same parts trans I m getting the input shaft from now
The outer shaft will move up and down enough to hit the inner shaft so I ll replace those bearings just for good measure

According to my old eyes there appears to be a tad bit of unworn shaft on the very front of the shaft so am thinking all of the clutch splines had contact with the shaft, or am I wrong? Wouldn't be the first time!

Ordered new bearings and seals for the input shaft from this site
Also ordered new nozzles for the injectors, pop test showed them leaking down, bad spray pattern and down about 500 psi. It s had a half miss at first start idle for a while along with a constant haze out the exhaust
Injectors where put in the fresh engine with new clutch summer of 2000
Figured while it s split I ll rebuild the injectors and fix the minor power steering pump leak
It could use some fresh paint but that will have to wait, as soon as it s back together I ve got to pull the 6610 in for a clutch job
Throw out bearing is locking up, lot of clutch action in the past 15 years baling round bales

RE: Spline Lube

Do you know anywhere to purchase 1 tube of the lube? I'm not finding anything with a google search. I don't need a case....

I didn't see Bern's spline lube link until after my prior post. I'd take a Schaeffer product over another any day. When you look at Bern's link, the distributor is not telling you what Schaeffer product you're buying and Schaeffer doesn't list that product on it's website, unless I really missed something. There's multiple greases that would probably work for your situation, but a call to Schaeffer would tell you what's best. I've switched to 219 Green, which looks like a good candidate for spline lube, but not sure. Another is 238. If you get to talk to Larry, he will have the final answer. When you nail down the product number, chances are good you'll be able to buy one tube off Amazon.

The shop manual recommends silicone grease.

I couldn't find Schaeffer NLGI #2 on their website either. At Bern's link the product is discounted 50%. Suggests to me that it might be discontinued. It doesn't look appropriate to use for common tractor grease applications or I'd buy the case. Tube grease has gotten expensive.

Picked up the new clutch components today at my local clutch builder
Received different shipping notices from this site, assuming they are coming from different locations

For reference, I think a case of 219 was about $300 end of last year. The 219 (219 SynForce Green NLGI 1 & 2) may be a good substitute for Bern's spline lube. Schaeffer Tech would know. It's extremely tacky and doesn't release from the surface to which it's applied. Available on Amazon in a 2 pack.
